National Park "Dzharylgachsky" was created by Decree of the President of Ukraine in 11th December 2009 year.

Park is the object of natural reserve fund of national importance subordinated to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

The park is budgetary, environmental, recreational, cultural, educational, scientific and research institution, is protected as a national treasure, for which established a special regime of protection, reproduction and use.

The ecological value of Dzharylgach and Dzharilgachsky Bay was known since the beginning of the twentieth century. Through the efforts of many scientists had proved that Dzharylgach and Dzharilgachsky Bay are the place of residence of many species of plants and animals, basic place to stay during migration and wintering waterfowl, a place rich stocks of commercial species.

Dzharylgach Island is the largest inhabited island in Europe. It left in its natural state rare and endemic plant groups. Gulf Dzharylgachsky is unique aquatic systems included in the list of wetlands of international importance as waterfowl habitat and place of concentration of birds during nesting, migration and wintering season. The wealth of bird species diversity is so great that the island has long been called "avian Eldorado."
The park has beautiful sea beaches for recreation. Recreational value caused by the climate and nature. Due to the shallow water and good water warming, a rare combination of steppe and sea air, saturated bromide - iodine compounds, high salinity, abundance of sunshine has great medical and recreational value.
The total area of the park: 10 000 ha.

NPP "Dzharylgachsky" is located in the northern part of the Black Sea, within Skadovsk district, Kherson region. It consists of island Dzharylgach and the Dzharylgach gulf coast and mainland from the Skadovsk city to the village Lazurne.
Dzharylgach has 4 main ecotopes: the northern coast of layers alluvial Zostera - eelgrass Zostera dead (Zostera marina, Z. noltii), the shell sand and plenty of sand spits; salt lakes and marshes with the typical vegetation; steppe, which occupies the middle of the island; southern coast with small sand dunes and endless beaches.
South Spit Dzharylgach - almost 42 km. beautiful white sand beaches and stunning views of the sea lagoon.

The central part is a flat area, most of which is occupied by steppe areas, which are interspersed with thickets introduced species Elaeagnus angustifolia and Tamarix.
In most elevated terrain in the steppe part of the island is growing rare species - Chrysopogon gryllus, a plant that can secure sands. For the sake of its protection in 1974 was created a botanical reserve "Dzharylgachsky" in the area of 300 hectares.
At the island is 200 lakes and almost all are salty. Unique is the northern part of Dzharylgach, which is popularly called "Pyndyky." Almost 4 km extending inland lakes with small islands, halophilous vegetation and reeds, where nesting abundance of ducks, herons, sandpipers. The system of lakes interconnected through lagoons and duct merges with the waters of the Gulf Dzharylgach. Most of these shallow lakes with sandy or silt bottoms.

Here fly cormorants and pelicans hunting for fish that comes into the lagoon. Along the coast, on sandy spits goals are colonies of sea dove and tern.
Dzharylgachsky bay is shallow, the greatest depth of 8m, and the smallest, which is nearly 30% of the waters reaches one meter. And yet - it is most salty sea bays of the Black Sea, because almost not replenished freshwater, and in summer even increased salinity due to evaporation.

In the western part through a narrow rill has access to the Black Sea, in the eastern part merges with the waters of the Karkinits'ka Gulf. Dzharylgachsky Bay is in the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. The unique location Dzharylgachsky natural complex diversity of its habitats, mild climate in winter and location towards the Azov-Black Sea migration corridor create some favorable conditions for birds in different seasons.

During migration and wintering in the Gulf is going to a large number of gulls, swans, geese, mallard.
Also, "Karkinitsky and Dzharylgachsky" Bay included in the list of national IBA areas for the conservation of birds and their habitats.

The fauna includes 83 marine invertebrates, amphibians - 4 -7 reptiles (3 - Red Book of Ukraine), fish - 57 (13 Rare), insects - 352 species (22 Rare), Birds 250 (69 - Red Book of Ukraine), mammals - 30 (15 - rare, 3 of them - Red book of Ukraine).
In the avifauna Park greatest representatives of water - wetland complex. Many birds are there in the winter, during migration and nesting in time. These are outstanding representatives as pink pelicans, herons yellow, shearer, snipe, red-breasted goose, gray duck, ogar, long-eared owl, a large number of gulls, tern, swans and others.

Within the Park found 8 species of reptiles, including 3 in the Red Book of Ukraine and other protected lists: - Vipera ursinii, Hierophis caspius and Elaphe sauromates.
Island species inhabit acclimatized ungulate animals: deer, moufflon and fallow deer. Rarely encountered wild boar. Mammal species are: red fox, raccoon dog, hare, shrews.
13 species of fish - in different security lists, including sturgeon A. sttellatus, Huso huso ponticus, croaker light Umbrina cirrosa, fish - needle S. variegatus, seahorse Hippocampus ramulosus. Numerical fish stocks are mullet, anchovies, sea cats, etc.

In the bay there are three species of cetacean from Red Book of Ukraine - afalina Tursiops truncates, Whitie dolphin Dephinus delphis, azovka Phocoena phocoena.
In the National Park "Dzharylgachsky" there are different types of vegetation: vegetation psamophytic steppe vegetation of salty water, halophytic, Synanthropic.

Flora has 51 endemic species. In the park grows 499 species of higher vascular plants, of which 51 to endemic, more than 10 species - the Red Book of Ukraine. Zolotoborodnyk tsykadovyy Chrysopogon gryllus, sword-grass marsh Cladium mariscus, Orchis picta, Orchis coriophora, Orchis palustris, Caucalis littoralis, glaucium flavum Glaucium flavum, Stipa borysthenica, Stipa capillata.
